Joseph T. Hicks was a Private in the 1st Miss. Lt. Arty, Co. G. He was enlisted 26 April 1862 in Vicksburg by J. J. Cowan and signed on for the war. His service was brief as he died 4 Aug 1862 of typhoid. One card from his compiled service record has been seen reporting a death date of 6 Aug, but that was from a report sent back to headquarters that originated later in the fall (see card below). This is his entry in the Fisher Funeral Home Records of Vicksburg (pg. 149) -- "Hicks, Joseph T., 4 Aug 1862; 19 yr. 3 mo.; V.B." [Vicksburg]

This is a legal document, a form of claim, that Mrs. Hicks, the mother of
Joseph T. Hicks, presented to a Hinds County court in order to receive anything
that was due her
son from the Confederacy, such as his pay. In it she swears that she is the
mother of Joseph T. Hicks of 1st Regiment of Light Artillery Volunteers, who
died near Vicksburg 4 Aug 1862, "leaving neither wife, child or father." She
signs about two-thirds of the way down the document. She also has a witness with her to
identify her. The paper is dated 19 Dec 1864. |
