Daniel Phelan enlisted 15 Aug 1861 in Hazlehurst, Miss. for a period of one year in the organization that became the 3 Regt Mississippi Volunteers.

From the record, "This company was successively designated as Captain Peyton's Company, (Old) Company A, and (New) Company K, 3d Regiment Mississippi Infantry.

He was mustered into service on 3 Oct 1861 at Camp Clark, Bay St. Louis, Miss., by Brig Gen. C. G. Dahlgren, 3rd Brigade, Army of Mississippi.

He was detailed as a shoemaker.

Daniel Phelan was discharged 16 Dec 1862, after his one year of service.
