Herman Nauen enlisted in the 13 Louisiana Inf. He mustered in at Camp Moore, Louisiana, 11 Sep 1861. He signed up for the period of the war. His company soon became Co. F.

Private Nauen is on a 23 Apr 1862 list of men who returned from the battlefield of Shiloh (6, 7 April) without weapons. He was severely wounded in his leg.

His paycheck for three months ending 31 Mar 1862 was $33.

He is interred at Vicksburg's Jewish Cemetery, Anshe Chesed Cemetery.
