While running the gauntlet, Gift had asked Lt. Read to come forward, and he described Read's approach thus, "He came leisurely and carelessly, swinging a primer lanyard, and I think I have never looked at a person displaying such remarkable coolness and self possession." 22 Eaton, Quartermaster- "Stationed on the ladder leading to the berth-deck was a Quartermaster named Eaton. He was assigned the duty of passing shells from the forward shell-room, and also had a kind of superintendence over the boys who came for powder. Eaton was a character. He had thick, rough, red hair, an immense muscular frame, and a will and courage rarely encountered. Nothing daunted him, and the hotter the fight, the fiercer grew Eaton. From his one eye he glared furiously on all who seemed inclined to shirk, and his voice grew louder and more distinct as the shot rattled and crashed upon our mail. At one instant you would hear him pass the word down the hatch : "Nine-inch shell, five-second fuse—here you are, my lad, with your rifle shell, take it and go back quick—what's the matter that you can't get that gun out?" and, like a cat, he would spring from his place and throw his weight on the side tackle, and the gun was sure to go out. "What are you doing here, wounded ? Where are you hurt? Go back to your gun, or I'll murder you on the spot—here's your nine-inch shell—mind, shipmate (to a wounded man), the ladder is bloody, don't slip, let me help you." 32 Unknown, Doctor After the run through the Federal fleet, the Arkansas lacked crew. Many who volunteered at Yazoo City left the boat at Vicksburg. The Arkansas also lacked doctors as those who had been onboard, at least two, had also left, sick. While the boat was being repaired at Vicksburg, Capt. Brown was looking for new men. Robert A. Jones in Confederate Corsair: The Live of Lt. Charles W. "Savez" Read writes, "The Arkansas lacked not only crew, but also officers, as both of the surgeons had taken ill. Brown telegraphed throughout the state for medical volunteers. A few days later the captain appointed a doctor from Clinton as surgeon. The officer of the powder division took the doctor on a tour of the ironclad. On passing the gun deck, the officer remarked that during battle, the wounded were carried below in a steady stream. At that moment the Union mortars opened up. The doctor spent the day standing on the companion ladder, ducking into his stateroom when he heard the whiz of the shells. After the shell hit he would return and watch for another. When the shells hit close by, he would grown, "Oh! Louisa and the babes!"

85 Minton [Murton], Stephen, Pvt 16 Jul Report of Lt. I. N. Brown, Capt. of the Arkansas. This man's name is Minton, though it was listed as Murton by Capt. Brown on his report for casualties of 15 July 1962. See memorial stone for Stephen at findagrave.com memorial #23048486. His cards at https://www.fold3.com/image/271/122454903 and https://www.fold3.com/image/271/122454913 note his 15 Jul 1862 death onboard the Arkansas; and on the back of the latter card is written, "Brave and good soldier" (https://www.fold3.com/image/271/122454924). Stephen died in the first battle of the day on the Yazoo River when he stuck his head out of a gun port and a cannonball decapitated him. The Captain ordered the body thrown overboard, but the soldier receiving the order cried, "Oh, Sir, I cannot, he is my brother!" Capt Ross enlisted July 20, 1861, in Company K, 3d Kentucky Infantry, organized by Col. Lloyd Tilghman. He was third lieutenant in Catain Barnett's company, and made a fine record as a soldier. Gentle and brave, he won both the admiration and the affection of his men, who always followed his lead. His regiment was at Bowling Green under Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, following in the retreat, and was in the carnage at Shiloh. Early Sunday morning, the first day of that battle, he was wounded, had his wound dressed and went back at once to the front and fought to the end of the second day. Again in the first siege of Vicksburg he showed the same fighting spirit. After the Arkansas Ra had successfully executed its daring feat in breaking through the Federal chain of forty vessels, disabling three or four of them and losing ten or twelve of her men, a call for volunteers was made to take the places of her killed and wounded. Captain Ross was among the first to step forward at a volunteer for this dangerous service. After leaving the Arkansas, he continued in service to his country by joining with Capt. H. Clay Horn, and the gallant Capt. Frank Gracey in Johnsonville, Tenn. Together, the three crossed the river on a improvised raft, it breaking apart and causing them to have to swim. Once near the other side of the river, the three captured the Federal transport Mazeppa, which had been disabled by the Confederate batteries. In December 1864, he was captured and taken to Camp Chase Prison, where he suffered terribly from cold and hunger until he was exchanged about the middle of March, 1865. After the war, he returned to his father's farm. He married and had six children. He was a successful farmer and engaged in the tobacco business in connection with his farm, building a stemming factory and putting up strips for the English market. He took a deep interest in all that concerned his neighborhood. He got up a Good Roads Club and induced all his neighbors to join in building one to the Clarksville Pike.

Capt.
Edward Baker Ross was born in Todd County, Ky., March 5, 1840; and died
December 7, 1911, on the farm where he grew up and lived. He received his
education on the farm at his father's school for boys ... He and his three
brothers all enlisted in the army and served to the close of the war, save
Col. Reuben Ross who was killed early in the service at Hopkinsville, Ky.
