30 Washington, H. W. M., Dr.

Henry William Macrae Washington was born in 1836 in Virginia. He completed his medical training at the University of Virginia 1853. He was a USN assistant surgeon until March of 1861 when he resigned to join the Confederate States Navy in June. He was onboard the Capitol when she moved the unfinished Arkansas from Memphis to Yazoo City, Miss., where he joined her crew.

Even though he was ill, he remained with the Arkansas and in July was onboard to assist with the 15 July run through the Federal fleet that had been threatening Vicksburg.

Smith writes, "Too ill to continue aboard, Washington was sent to a Vicksburg hospital shortly after the vessel docked, being transferred on to the facility at Edwards Station." He most likely was not a part of the Arkansas' trip to Baton Rouge.
