Cooper Wells Stones Come to Vicksburg
28 May 2016

The Lt. G. J.G. Pemberton Camp 1354 coordinated with others in the Third Brigade to set about 50 stones in one of the lots in Cedar Hills Cemetery controlled by Lt. G. J.C. Pemberton Camp 1354.

These men died at Mississippi Springs and were buried at Cooper Wells. The Cooper Wells location is not available for Confederate stone placement, so these stones lay on the ground for 15 years waiting for a home. On 28 May, the Third Brigade retrieved the stones and delivered them to Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg.

The Cooper Wells memorial location was begun by planning a grid in which the markers would be aligned.

Existing markers, like this Unknown, of CSA soldiers were incorporated into the grid layout. Red flags denote where stones will be  placed. Thanks to Bryan Skipworth for the gridwork.

Thanks to Trent Lewis for being the sparkplug for the effort of getting these markers to Vicksburg and to Wayne McMaster for being the camp's point man in setting up this effort.

Left, another view of the grid layout. Note the existing CSA markers.

There was a great effort to get the stones here. Thanks to Bryan Skipworth for repairing the broken stones (above right) and starting the effort to put them in the ground.

Above, the first row of stones is perfectly installed.

Right, at the end of the first workday.

Another workday.

There was a Third Brigade workday on 16 Jul, resulting in almost all stones being in place.
Above, left, Mr. Wayne McMaster (in white shirt) discusses the work.
They heard someone had a camera, so some quick photos were made
before they put the photographer back to work.

On 27th Sep 2016, Wayne McMaster and Bryan Skipworth finished installing the rest of the flags on the markers and cleaned all the markers.

Everyone pitched in to honor these CSA soldiers killed at Cooper Wells in the summer of 1862.

Most were buried at Cooper Wells, near Mississippi Springs.

There are 48 stones erected with room for 6 more.

A memorial service will be planned.
