Manis, Sterling, Pvt., Co. E, 43rd Tennessee Infantry, born 1829 near Rogersville, Tenn., enlisted November 15, 1862, at Lenoirs, Tenn., died May 11, 1863, in Hospital #3,  Vicksburg, Miss., pre-war farmer, married Rachael Jones November 29, 1848, with whom five children were born, subsequent to his death and suffering having her farm raided by “rebels,” Rachael in despair, sent their children to a neighbor’s home and hung herself, the children were raised by relatives and friends .
