Dennis, John, Pvt., Co. H, 43rd Tennessee Infantry, born December 30, 1831, in Tennessee, enlisted for 12 months February 27, 1862, at Riceville, Tenn., died in hospital of sickness June 21, 1863, buried in Soldiers Rest, Vicksburg City Cemetery, prewar married Sally E. Hood with whom two children were born.

The company muster roll for July & Aug 1863 (shown at right) notes that Jno Dennis was "Absent" and that he was "On parole & has not reported to his co."

 

 

He is shown on a list of prisoners of war captured 4 Jul 1863 and paroled at Vicksburg (see below), and he still received a parole which he supposedly signed.

 

But note the card to the right, where is noted that John Dennis died 21 Jun 1863 before the surrender of Vicksburg.

The parole of John Dennis, Pvt., Co. D, 43 Reg't Tenn with what we are to take as his signature.
