Marmaduke Shannon enlisted in the 4 Miss Cav, Co. C, on 1 Dec 1863 in Port Gibson, Miss., for the length of the war. He was 18 years old.

At the time of his enlistment, he was a student and a resident of Vicksburg, Warren Co., Miss., where he had been born.

On the company muster roll of 1 May 1864 to 30 Jun 1864, he was marked "Absent" because he was "detailed as a scout."
