Thornton Sthreshley was born in Virginia. He was a student, age 16, when he enlisted in the 21st Miss. Inf., Co. H, on 4 Mar 1862 at Bovina, Miss. He gave his residence as Vicksburg and his marital status as single.

On 1 Jan 1864, he was promoted to 3rd Corp.
