Pvt. Benjamin I. Hicks served in 1st Miss. Lt. Arty, Co. G. He enlisted 16 May 1862 in Vicksburg, for the length of the war.

His name in his compiled service record is seen as what appears to be B. J. Hicks. The letters I and J are often difficult to distinguish from each other in handwriting.

Left, a card from his compiled service record showing he enlisted 16 May 1862 in Vicksburg. The handwritten note at the bottom indicates he received his pay under the name Ben J. Hicks. Did he go by Ben?

Above, another card from his compiled service record, this one for the Company Muster Roll of Mar and Apr 1864.
